You may have noticed that some of the formatting of the pages on the site look a bit different today. Don’t worry yourself about it. I’m just fiddling with the style sheet, trying to make things even more pleasant to look at. As if that’s actually possible. This site’s perfect already, right?

Last week, Christoph Haas asked if I could possibly link to his thoroughly interesting PDA Lifestyle site. Since Christoph seemed like a decent fellow, and seeing as how PDA Lifestyle started out as the online magazine Newton Lifestyle way back in 1997, how could I say no? Christoph told me how proud they were of their 40 articles dealing specifically with the Newton and how they are especially well known for their software tests and hardware tinkering reports. One drawback is that PDA Lifestyle is published only in German, so you may need to rely on Babelfish to mangle a translation for you. At any rate, please welcome the newest addition to the Newton Links page.

My apologies to those people who may have been trying to access the message boards or attempting to request a membership. Both of these areas of the site were inoperable due to an overzealous security patch that I installed a couple of days ago. For whatever reason, the patch threw a wrench into the works and all of the bulletin board CGIs and other scripts on the site ground to a screeching halt. I managed to find a temporary work around for the problem to get things up and running again, but things may still change as I dig deeper for a permanent solution. I’ll keep you posted, while trying to keep the downtime to a minimum.

The almost definitive online guide to Newton-related terms and definitions has finally been updated. Yes, I’m talking about the indispensible Newton Glossary. Now sporting over 700 terms for your perusal and subsequent enjoyment. Hey, it hasn’t even been ten months since the last glossary update. Yeesh.

You know what’s really fascinating? When you take the time to review the server logs for this site, you find out that lots of people actually notice when new things happen around here. Case in point, the launch of the Newtons Around the World gallery announced last week attracted the attention of several folks who have probably never even owned a Newton. Look! We got mentioned on Heng-Cheong Leong’s MyAppleMenu, Matthew Haughey’s A Whole Lotta Nothing, and Adam Gaffin’s Compendium weblog over on the NetworkWorldFusion site, just to name a few. A tip of the bucket cap to each and every one of you. It’s deeply appreciated.

The Newtons Around The World gallery has just had its first official update. Not only are there a whopping five (count’ em five) new images posted, but I also found some time to tweak to the photo credits for better legibility. But that’s not all. Contributors who originally submitted their web site or email address along with their images are now linked from the corresponding pages. A big flapping wave of the upper appendages goes out to Steven Frank, Andy Hakim, and C. W. Otto Sohn for their recent contributions to the project. Now, what’s keeping the rest of you from sending something in?

Way back in April, I mentioned my interest in starting up a project which would feature images of Newtons all over the globe. Well, guess what? It has finally happened. I am tickled pink to announce that the Newtons Around The World gallery is now open for public viewing. I’d like to thank the following folks who were kind enough to submit images after my original announcement of the project. Join me in offering a tip of the hat to: Andree Dettmer, John Charlton, Sushi, Mimi Cipollone, and Victor Rehorst. By the way, my current favorite is this image taken by John Charlton which features Elvis, a Newton, and a cup of poutine. How could you not love it?
Now, don’t let just these individuals bask in the limelight. If you have a picture of your Newton that you’d like to have posted in this new gallery, please send the following items to email hidden; JavaScript is required

  1. An image of you with your Newton somewhere in the world. Indoors. Outdoors. Whatever.
  2. Images should be supplied in either high quality JPEG, TIFF (.tif), or native Photoshop (.psd) formats. Image dimensions to be no smaller than 640 pixels x 480 pixels. No GIF format images please.
  3. A text caption describing where in the world the Newton shown in the image was at the time. Please include a city and country (or failing that, the longitude and latitude) if at all possible.
  4. Your name and web site (optional).

Let’s get out there and prove that Newtons are everywhere!

Well it’s about bloody time, you might well say to yourself. Believe it or not, I’ve actually managed to install, rotate, and balance a few new entries on the Newton Links page. And while I was under the hood, I updated several sites whose addresses had been recently folded, spindled, or mutilated. Now doesn’t that feel better?

The support section has finally been updated to reflect the additional domain names that may be used in conjunction with Newted email accounts and member pages. See this news item for a wee bit of background information. Of course, you folks already had all this technical stuff figured out, right? Nobody ever needs to visit the support pages…
