The Newted Community

The home away from home for Newton users since 1999.

August 29, 2002

Two quick pointers to articles that appear on Wired News this morning. Apple’s Newton Just Won’t Drop relates a fairly accurate description of the energy and enthusiasm that still exists in the Newton community. Aside from a couple of minor technical glitches (the top-end MessagePad 2100 uses a 162-MHz processor, not a 20-MHz), this story kicks it. And get a load of all those other Canadian green-bleeders hanging around the CN Tower. What a bunch of geeks, eh Victor? Unfortunately, a second article entitled Newton’s Return: A Hit and Myth, seems to little more than a rehash of rumours and speculation surrounding Apple’s return to the hand held market. I suppose it doesn’t hurt to wish and wonder. Naturally, there’s a discussion regarding the articles on the NewtonTalk list. Oh, excuse me… my Newton’s ringing.

Thanks to a bit of serendipitous luck, I have managed to finally obtain the elusive newted.com domain name for use with the Newted Community site. While the former Newted Community administrator had secured both the newted.org and newted.net domains shortly after starting the site, some pie-eating domain squatter grabbed the .com out from under his nose. But what goes around, comes around. Right, kids? You can now reach the Newted Community using any of the following urls:

http://www.newted.com/
http://newted.com/
http://www.newted.net/
http://newted.net/
http://www.newted.org/
http://newted.org/

Not only does this simplify the task of typing in the typographically quaint newted.dyndns.org url, but it means that everyone with a Newted Community account automagically gets a couple more email aliases. For example, if your current Newted email address is:

email hidden; JavaScript is required

You can now use any of the following addresses for that same account:

email hidden; JavaScript is required
email hidden; JavaScript is required
email hidden; JavaScript is required

Don’t have your very own Newted Community email account yet? Hit the membership page, and I’ll fix you right up.

I’m back. I’m refreshed. And all those pesky membership requests that were sent in during the past week or so have been processed.

Please note that new membership requests will not be processed until the week of August 19th while the management takes a bit of a break from the old keyboard and mouse. And while I certainly respect and encourage your patronage of the Newted Community site, indeed I appreciate your patience even more. See you in a week or so, folks.

This week the Newted Community membership roster passed the 800 member mark. Coincidentally, it was six months ago almost to the day when I announced we had surpassed the 700 member plateau. Amazing. As great as adding 100 new members in six months sounds, I need to mention that a significant number of those accounts are currently inactive. In fact, there are still over 500 accounts that were originally set up way back when, that have not been reactivated since the account passwords were inadvertently reset approximately a year and a half ago. Thanks to a membership reactivation blitz earlier this year, I was contacted by a dozen or so interested parties who had either forgot about their account or stopped using it. That was a great start. However, I am still on the prowl for anyone who once had a Newted Community account and for some reason stopped using it. If you’re one of those folks, or you happen to know someone who fits that description, please contact me. I’d love to reactivate a few more of those old accounts before I do a thorough house cleaning. Thanks to everyone for their support!

AppleShare access to the Newted Community server is currently unavailable. This is due to the firewall security in place at the temporary hosting facility where the server is sitting right now. The server will be moving back to its cosy and more permanent home in my basement sometime within the next week. Once the server is moved, for what I hope is the last freakin’ time, all services including AppleShare access will be up and running again. Please note that if you have bookmarked the Newted server’s previous IP address, you will need to change this once I have posted the new address. Stay tuned to the support page for updated instructions. Once again, I offer voluminous apologies for the unintended inconvenience.

I’d like to thank all of the fine folks who have requested a Newted Community membership over the past week for their patience while I gradually wade through the pile of new applications. It just figures that Apple would announce the end of the free ride for iTools the same week that I was moving servers and having a new DSL connection installed. While I certainly appreciate the fact that many of you thought of the Newted Community as a possible substitute for the once free iTools service, the turnaround is not currently as speedy as it should be. However, I should have the entire backlog of accounts created by the end of this week. Thanks again.

The newted.org and newted.net domains will be periodically unavailable for the next few days. They are working fine right now, but could stop at any moment. This is due to changes I am making to the domain records while I move both the primary DNS server and the web server back home to my basement. All of this is actually a good thing because it means that my new DSL connection should be running before the weekend. If you need reasonably uninterrupted access to the Newted Community server, make sure your bookmarks point to the main newted.dyndns.org domain. Oh, and wish me luck.
