The Newted Community

The home away from home for Newton users since 1999.

Newted Community server move update. As you have probably noticed, the Newted Community server is still running along quite fine, thank you very much. The swell folks at Webcore Labs were able to provide me with a temporary parking stall for both this server and my own box full of sites. Please be aware that this doesn’t mean that everything is back to normal. The currently situation is that I no longer have a DSL connection at home, as my previous service provider finally yanked my last remaining IP address yesterday. And because of the volume of new accounts being set up by my new provider (no doubt due to the fact that the parent company of the aforementioned ISP have royally screwed numerous other customers), I won’t have a connection or IP addresses in place until late next week. When my new DSL account is activated, it will mean moving the Newted Community server back to the cozy confines of my basement. Once again, there will be a short period of time during which this server will not be accessible, probably over the coming weekend. Just thought you’d like to know what was going on.

I think we’re back in action after a seemingly successful server move. Stay tuned.

Important notice to all Newted Community members. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have found it necessary to switch to a different ADSL service provider. This switch will affect the availability of the Newted Community server, including all web access, e-mail accounts, and the message boards for an indeterminate amount of time starting some point within the next two weeks. My best guess is that this server will be offline for approximately 2 or 3 days starting on the 12th of July. I wish I could be more exact with this time estimation, but as anyone who has had to deal with changing internet providers and updating domain name records can attest, this is not going to be a precise chain of events. I will provide whatever details I can on this page, right up until the time that the existing connection is terminated. As soon as everything is up and running again, you will be notified via your Newted Community e-mail account. Thanks in advance for your support and understanding.

This is getting a bit tiring. Yes, the NewtonTalk mailing list is offline once again due to some sort of snafu with Verizon in New York. No one has been able to get in touch with the server dad, Bill Shamam, other than Victor Rehorst, who is currently winding his way through Yugoslavia. Paul Guyot is looking into the feasibility of setting up a temporary read-only list based on a recent back up of the members and addresses so that news and updates may be delivered to the wondering masses. Rest assured that things will be fixed, it’s just not known when. If you’re in dire need of Newton-related companionship, there’s always the emergency backup list over at Yahoo! Groups.

The NewtonTalk mailing list and associated site are down again while we wait for even one responsible Verizon employee to wake up from a saturated fat-induced lunchtime coma and eventually realize that there may actually be a problem. Ok, after a short outage everything appears to be back to normal now. Stop worrying so much, will ya?

Huzzah! NewtonTalk is back. Network handyman and all around good egg, Bill Shamam, shared the following clarification with the mailing list. It describes exactly happened to cause the outage in the first place:

“Just to clarify some things I’ve seen on the list and on chuma.org”

“The outage was no fault of our ISP (PINS). It was actually caused by faulty wiring in the basement of my building. The wiring is Verizon’s property and responsibility (they’re no better than when they were called NYNEX or Bell Atlantic).”

“Just to add some karma points back to PINS, I would like to say that their service and attention to detail are excellent and that anyone looking for a quality ISP (for businesses, they don’t provide residential dialup or DSL) should consider them.”
Now, back to our regularly scheduled online experience.

NewtonTalk mailing list update. Victor sent the following message to the NewtonTalk 2 emergency list:

“There’s some network issue with PINS (the people who provide the T1 to Bill Shamam at Guns Media, which is where NewtonTalk is) that has been messing us up since the weekend. PINS is aware of it, and hopefully things will be back up by tomorrow.”
So there you go. For those of you who were not aware that there is a backup NewtonTalk mailing list for the rare occasions when things go all cattywumpus, more information can be found over at Yahoo! Groups.

What the heck is going on with the NewtonTalk mailing list today? The only news I have been able to find is from a note posted on Victor Rehorst’s personal site that states:

“Newtontalk.net and newyork.unna.org are down for now. I am working on getting a copy of the NewtonTalk subscriber list so I can send a general announcement. More to come.”
I guess the best thing to do is to sit tight and relax. Updates will be posted as they become available.
