A small, hardly even noticeable problem with the membership forms was corrected. If anyone was confused by the fact that even the free Associates membership request form was presenting you with a PayPal payment notice, you weren’t alone. Suffice it to say, all has been returned to the way it was original intended. Oh, and stay tuned for some exciting news about the Newted Community early next month. Your going to love it. No, really…

My sincere apologies for the temporary mail outage yesterday morning. We had a major spring snow storm roll through Calgary which caused a series of power grid burps. As it so happened, the Newted Community server was the only box I hadn’t quite got around to plugging into the uninterruptable power supply yet. Needless to say, the power went out and so did the server. The Qube is now plugged into the UPS, just so you know.

I recently received a couple of worrisome messages from the SpamCop reporting service that seemed to indicate that some nasty folks were using the Newted Community membership form to send unsolicited missives to the masses. Sure enough, the FormMail script I was unwittingly using was a five year old version containing several unpatched security holes. At any rate, the latest version of FormMail has been installed, I made a few nifty usability changes to the form itself, and the spammers can now go away and suck hot death for all I care.

The backlog of membership requests is finally gone. Everyone who had requested a new account or a reactivation of an old account over the past few weeks should have received an email with all of the pertinent details. Once again, I’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while waiting for the incredible number of new memberships requests to be set up. To be completely honest, I don’t think I’ll take a three week break ever again. There’s just too much work to catch up on when I get back. Yeesh.

Guess what the cat dragged in? I’m back from my break and ready to tackle the big pile of new membership requests you folks left piled up on the steps. Your patience is once again appreciated as I slowly get back up to cruising speed. As always, if you have any concerns or questions, drop me a line.

Please note that replies to any email messages sent to me regarding Newted Community business will be extremely slow over the next couple of weeks. I am taking a break from all things computer related and digging into some other personal and educational projects for a little while. This will also unfortunately affect the turnaround time for any new requests for Newted Community memberships. Your patience is appreciated during this period. I promise that all requests and inquiries will be addressed en masse once I return to the digital world sometime in early April. Trust me.

We’re all feeling much better now, thank you very much. The last few gremlins have been purged from the system and email accounts are now functional again. Let’s just keep our collective appendages crossed for a little while yet. The patience you folks displayed while we were banging our heads against our keyboards was certainly appreciated. An especially deserving tip of the toque goes out to Victor Rehorst, Ken Whitcomb, and Paul Guyot for their suggestions, investigating, poking, prodding, and offers of empathetic shoulders to cry on. And yes, in case you were wondering… I did manage to document everything I did to fix things this time. Have a great weekend!
