Ok, so everything isn’t quite working the way it’s supposed to yet. Web and FTP services are back up, as are the Newted message boards, but unfortunately email access is still kerflunky. This similar to this little issue that we had back in December. Rest assured that some the brightest minds in the known world are working on the problem as we speak.

Nuts. Due to an odd ADSL outage early this morning (Technical explanation: you know the red blinky light on the front of your apparently discontinued modem which indicates that bad things have happened – well, it was on…), the Cobalt Qube that hosts the Newted Community site lost it’s router gateway configuration and decided to disconnect itself from the network. Lovely. Since the server was at home, I was at work all day, and the web-based administration tools only work when the box is actually on the network (go figure), this issue couldn’t be corrected until late this evening. If you can read this, then everything is copacetic again. Apologies all around.

Somewhere along the way, I managed to bust the style sheet declaration for the <b></b> tags used on this site. As you can probably tell from the datelines on this page, it’s obviously working again. What a code putz I can be sometimes. You may now return back to your regularly scheduled web site.

Well, isn’t that nice. Since I posted my note regarding the pile of inactive accounts currently dwelling on the Newted server, I’ve had half a dozen or so old school community members stop by for a freshen up. Welcome home folks. Now, it’s back to chasing after the four hundred and ninety other lost sheep.

How about them apples, Isaac? As of this very evening, the Newted Community membership roster passed the 700 member mark. My word. It seems like only a few months ago that we hit 600 members. Come to think of it, it was only a few months ago. Now, before we get all carbonated by the bubbles of our own success, we must remember that not all 700 of those accounts are currently active. In fact, there are over 500 accounts that were originally set up by Stacey Tenen way back when, that have not been reactivated since all the account passwords were reset about a year ago. If you know anyone who once had a Newted Community account and for whatever reason stopped using it, have them contact me. I’d love to get some of those vintage accounts out of stasis.

Aw, nuts. The Newted Community ended up not being selected as one of the finalists in the 2002 SXSW Website Competition, not that it’s any great surprise. As you may or may not recall, I entered this site on a whim in the redesign and relaunch category because, darn it all, we went through quite the redesign and relaunch here over the summer. Oh well, there’s always next year.

I have unfortunately had to change the way the Newted Community server handles SMTP (outbound) email. If you have been using the Newted Community server (newted.dyndns.org) as your SMTP or outbound mail server, you will need to change your email client to use a different SMTP server. Due to the Newted Community server being flagged (inappropriately, if you want my opinion…) by the rather over zealous Open Relay Database as an mail server operating as an open relay, I have had to block the use of the server as an SMTP relay altogether. Bummer.
What this means to you is that you will need to use the SMTP mail server provided by your local ISP when sending mail from your Newted email account. Please note that this does not affect the POP3 or IMAP access to the Newted Community server.
If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact me.
My apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause. Should a solution to this situation be found that satisfies both the ORDB and you, the Newted Community at large, I will let you know via email and on this news page.

Well look at that. The 2001 Newties have been announced and not only was the Newted Community runner-up in the Best Overall Web Site category behind Victor Rehorst’s indescribably useful United Network of Newton Archives, but we snagged an honorable mention for the Best FTP Archive. Wow. Imagine what would happen if I actual spent some time organizing that tangled pile of spaghetti into something that even vaguely resembled a proper file archive. At any rate, I’m quite pleased with those two Newtie rankings, seeing as this site didn’t even show up as a finalist last year. It certainly doesn’t match the thrill of winning Favorite Newton Web Site back in 1999, but hey, we’re still on the road to recovery here. Thanks to everyone who voted for the Newted Community in this years Newties. Your support is certainly appreciated.

I think I managed to stuff all those bothersome command line hamsters back into their applicable cages. And yes, this means that email services should be up and running properly again.
