Due to a few unforeseen side effects caused by me playing Mr. Smarty Pants sysadmin last night, you may find that you’re locked out of your Newted email accounts. If you’re seeing messages like “** Pop server error -ERR [SYS/TEMP] maillock error 4” and “** Couldn’t complete the last command because a network stream error occurred.”, this would be why. I am crawling through this mess of an operating system trying to undo what I did as we speak. Wish me luck.

I would like to wish the happiest of holidays to everyone out there, members and visitors alike. And on a related note, I’d like to mention that if you submit a request for a Newted Community membership or email a support question over the next week or so, please be aware that responses may take slightly longer than the promised 48 hours. After all, ’tis the season where family and relaxation comes first. Even the web site elves need a break once in a while.

Need a last minute holiday gift idea? The indispensible Newton Glossary has been updated. Oh, and I should mention that this is your last chance to vote for the Newted Community in the 2001 Newtie Awards. Get your tail on over there and dimple a chad for the home team. Pretty please?

For reasons previously discussed on this very page, former Newted Community caretaker, Stacey Tenen, was unable to access his email account after the Newted server was transferred to its comfy new home in Calgary. Well, last week Stacey finally managed to wade through the swampy morass of delinquent messages, and forwarded approximately one hundred unprocessed membership requests that had been submitted over the past year. Bounding into action like an animal possessed, I sent out a blanket email which first of all apologized for the oversight and obvious technical glitches, and then explained that we would still like all you fine folks as members. Since that message was sent, I have registered just over two dozen new members who really didn’t seem to mind the wait. Thanks for being so patient folks. We’ll try to keep any future delays down to a couple days.

Apparently the links to the Proxim RangeLan driver and the modified Newton Devices package found in the Wireless Primer for the Newton article have been broken since the redesign went live. They are now unbroken. Related to this, I’ve finally got with it and added a MIME type to the Apache config files specifically to handle Newton packages. Any file on the server ending with the .pkg extension should now download properly, like a .zip or .hqx archive, rather than loading as raw text into the browser window. If you notice any behavior that contradicts this, please let me know.

It’s that time of the year again. Yes, voting for the 2001 Newtie Awards has commenced over at This Old Newt. Not that I am trying in any way to sway the free will of the voting public, but now would be the most opportune time for me to encourage you to consider casting your ballot for the Newted Community in the category of Best Newton Site. Come on, you know you want to, right?

Another month has begun and you know what that means. An updated Newton FAQ has been posted for all to peruse and enjoy. And as an added bonus, it gets me off the hook for not posting anything new here for over two weeks. Not that any of you fine folks ever thought I was slacking off, right?

Through the magic of an arcane Unix command and much holding of breath, I think I may have fixed a long standing problem with passwords not working with certain IMAP and AppleTalk file sharing logins. I’m pretty sure that nothing went haywire while I was tinkering under the hood, but just in case you are no longer able to log into your Newted email or FTP account, please let me know as soon as possible.

Just for the heck of it, I paid my fifteen dollars and entered the Newted Community site in the 2002 SXSW Website Competition under the category of redesign/relaunch. SXSW is an annual conference and multi-disciplinary festival geared towards interactive media artists, producers, and the like. It’s probably incredibly wishful thinking on my part that the Newted Community will fit in amongst the other higher profile entrants, but you never know if you never try.

A special tip of the hat to freshly minted community member Mietek Bak for pointing out that the FormMail script used to process membership requests didn’t work with any of the new domains. And a voluminous round of applause goes out to Victor Rehorst for helping me figure out why the heck my command line text editor was acting all cattywumpus since the system updates this past weekend. Gosh darn it, don’t you love it when you learn something new every single day?
