Thanks to the foresight of the former Newted Community sysop, Stacey Tenen, and a tenacious need to horde domain names by yours truly, there are now several new ways to reach the Newted Community site. Punch these uniform resource locators into your browser and just see what comes up…
http://www.newted.org/
http://newted.org/
http://www.newted.net/
http://newted.net/
Not only does this simplify the daunting task of typing in the typographically quaint newted.dyndns.org url, but it also means that everyone with a Newted Community account automagically gets a couple new email aliases. For example, if your current Newted email address is:
email hidden; JavaScript is required
You can now use either one of the following addresses for that same account:
email hidden; JavaScript is required
email hidden; JavaScript is required
Ain’t that slick? Enjoy.

I’m about a third of the way through the server updates and so far, I haven’t busted anything. I should be finished later this afternoon. Everybody keep your fingers crossed, ok?

The Newted Community site runs on a Cobalt Qube 2. After paying a visit to the Cobalt support site a while ago, I discovered that the Qube is 13 patches and a major OS update behind the times. Oops.
Now, downloading and applying these patches is a fairly straight forward process, but the last time a major update was applied, all of the user passwords expired. Ugh. I certainly don’t expect that to be the case this time around. However, should something end up not working the way it was, please let me know about it. In the meantime, since I have to reboot the server after each of the updates or patches is applied, the Newted site and its services (such as email) may be unavailable for short periods of time throughout the remainder of the weekend.
Wish me luck.

I’ve added a link to Victor Rehorst’s brand spanking new Newton OS Errors Database along side the other popular resources in the navigation menu. If you can’t find out what’s ailing you or your Newton now, the situation is hopeless.

It’s a fresh new month, and what better way to start it off than with some fresh new content? Both the Newton FAQ and the Newton Glossary have been updated for November. Now, dig in and remember to chew well before swallowing.

After realizing that some of the most important information regarding accessing the Members Only area of the site didn’t really exist anywhere, I added it to the support page. Always try to stay one step ahead of disaster, I like to say.

I’ve just begun to dig through the absolutely atrocious built-in HTML formatting of the Ultimate Bulletin Board software that powers the Newted message boards. All I can say at this point is… yikes! I’ve made a few changes to the look and feel to start off, mainly to match the redesign of the static pages found on the rest of the site. I also managed to figure out how to left align the Newted Community graphic on the main message board page. Woot! That unassuming little task turned into quite an adventure, wading through the endless, poorly documented reams of Perl code that this beast of a board uses. Hopefully things won’t look too wonky after I get through with my first attempts at editing and tweaking. Wish me luck.

“Still constant is a wondrous excellence.” Ok, I’m not going to make a habit of quoting William Shakespeare on this site, but this particular turn of phrase seemed darn appropriate. Gradual, subtle improvements are taking place on the Newted site, and unless you’re as persnickety as I am, you probably haven’t even notices. Suffice it to say that all pages now feature a “last modified” entry in the footer, and I’ve added nearly a dozen new sites to the links page. Now, doesn’t it feel better to know that?

Still tweaking the layout and the style sheet. The page width is now set to be approximately 90% of the width of your current browser window, as opposed to the 75% I had previously specified. This should make the site a bit easier to look at for folks with smaller monitors. Less screen real estate will be padded with extraneous white space. Remember, I’m only thinking of you when I do this kind of thing. Once again, your comments and bug reports are always appreciated.
